The kitchen flooring you choose is important for the look of your kitchen but also for safety. Any flooring you put down must be slip resistant as otherwise it is so easy to have an accident when carrying hot food and dishes from the stove or when carrying sharp knives. If you are not sure where to begin choosing a safe and attractive floor, here are a few pointers about types of kitchen flooring you might select to help you get you started.
Tiles
It is best to have hard flooring in a kitchen as the flooring must be washable. It must not get easily damaged when items are spilled including oil and greasy food as well as water. Tiles are one of the main types of flooring used in a kitchen as they give a hard attractive surface. Be aware however that if you use natural stone tiles they may be absorbent therefore stain so always treat them with a suitable sealant. Whatever tiles you choose make sure they are textured as this will help prevent slipping. One type of tile that is starting to be used in contemporary kitchen is a tile made of textured rubber and that is about the best kind there is to prevent slipping.
Vinyl
Another main type of flooring which is useful in a kitchen setting is vinyl. You can buy this in the form of tiles but it is also available on a roll. It is available in many attractive patterns and designs and it is comfortable to walk on as it is slightly cushioned if you buy good quality vinyl. Vinyl is easy to keep clean and it is relatively inexpensive so it is a good choice if you have a small budget.
Laminate Flooring
If you like the look of hardwood you will be disappointed to find that it is not suitable for use in a kitchen where it can be easily damaged by spills of water or oil. You do have the option of laminate flooring however, some of which can be used in a kitchen. (Check the specifications of the product as some laminates are not suitable for kitchen use).
