Air conditioner filters(or ac filters) keep dirt and dust from clogging air conditioners and contaminating the air. A good air filter is also helpful in trapping allergens. It helps maintain a properly functioning air conditioning system that produces clean air.
These filters come in various types which have varying degrees in trapping dirt, dust, and allergens in the air. Since their main function is to catch harmful particles present in the air, cleaning ac filters is critical to ensure that they will be able to serve their intended purpose.
Some of the types of air filter that you should look into are as follows:
- Fiber glass air filters – They are intended to trap only large particles in the air. This filter is the cheapest, yet it is disposable. Households and offices that use fiber glass air filters should replace as necessary to avoid air contamination, and to prevent air conditioners from overworking.
- Pleated fiber glass air filters – This fiber glass air filter variety is more effective in capturing dirt. Since its material is more thickly woven, thus more dirt is trapped in the fibers. It has an increased surface area due to its pleated design.
- Mesh air filters – The permanent mesh variety of air conditioner filters is made from various types of materials, hence why, their effectiveness differs. This type of filter is reusable so it lasts longer. There are types of permanent mesh filters that require being sprayed on by an adhesive after washing, so it can trap dirt again.
- Electrostatic filters – They are made from a special material that produces a charge whenever air passes through it. The charge attracts dust and dirt and keeps it on the surface until the filter is cleaned. It functions like an electric air filter, since it needs an electric power source in order to function. An electric filter has a pre-filter and a main filter. The pre-filter captures large particles, while the main filter captures the small particles.
- HEPA or high-efficiency particulate arresting filters – These filters are considered the most effective air filter. They are capable of removing dirt that is as small as 0.3 micrometers in diameter – smaller than the diameter of human hair. Moreover, HEPA filters have randomly arranged fibers and pleats that are effective in filtering the air.
Regardless of the filter a household or an office uses, what’s important is that it is kept clean to ensure good air quality.
