The First Step in any Basement Remodeling

If you have made the decision to remodel your basement then you need to start out on the right foot.  Every one can make a project look nice in the end but the key to a good job is making it last. In a basement this is especially trying to do moisture issues, knowing this lets look at some ways to stop those problems before you start any new basement remodeling.

The first thing that you need to look for is any existing water pooling or condensation in your basement. These areas need to be marked out on a diagram for future reference later in your waterproofing efforts. As you search for these moisture problems, take note of any cracks or bulging of the walls or floor. These can be signs of major foundation issues and need to be inspected by a foundation repair expert. If they find that there are no real problems and that it is just settling perhaps, then you can seal these areas with a good epoxy to prevent any further water entrance. If they do find an issue, immediately have them repair it, this is a major supporting system of your home and not something to mess around with.

Once you have identified any areas that are having water problems, go outside your home with your diagram to check for water issues in the areas corresponding to the basement leaks. If you find any water there, check for leaky or damaged gutters or low lying landscaping. Repair any damage and install a french drain in the low lying areas before raising the landscaping to slope away from your home. Then you may go back inside your basement to complete the waterproofing job.

Inside you will want to paint your walls with a good quality waterproofing material available at any hardware store. Follow the manufacturers application directions and do not be afraid to paint more then one time unless directed not to. Once you have applied this you may wish to install a dehumidifier for additional backup. Now you are safe to go about your basement remodeling plans, enjoy!
