Your garage door has finally given out. You never thought it would happen, but it did. After calling your local contractor, or checking it out yourself, you’ve seen that the cause of your garage malfunction is a broken garage door spring.
There are two types of garage door springs: torsion and extension springs. I’m not going to cover extension springs. These springs, generally located at the back of garage doors, are relatively safe for homeowners to replace themselves. Instead, I’m going to be covering torsion springs.
Now that you know what is causing the problem, it’s time to fix it. Now, this is a little easier said than done. If you’ve done any research, you’ve probably read that you should not try to change your torsion springs yourself.
Firstly, that is probably good advice overall. It can be incredibly dangerous to change them since they exert such strong force. If you aren’t careful, you may become seriously injured if you aren’t confident in your skills or follow directions closely.
Secondly, If you decide to change it on your own, make sure you follow the directions and diagrams meticulously. Also make sure that your tools are good in working condition, and purchase specialty tools that you may need to replace the torsion springs.
If you’re not comfortable around powerful springs, you should definitely look into hiring a professional garage door technician. It’s worth the $100 – $250 cost to have a professional do it right the first time, and you don’t have to worry about injuring yourself or if you installed it correctly.
You should objectively assess your technical skills and abilities, before you try to fix it yourself. If you have any doubts at all, I encourage you to hire a trained professional. But if you’re confident in your skills, here are two resources that will help you gain a better understanding of garage door springs. Furthermore, you might want to another run through of the common garage door repairs that you can fix on your own without special tools, risk, or costly materials.
