Make Yourself A Man Cave With An Easy Garage Conversion

If you have an older home, chances are you are going to have to do some renovations, and one of the best ways to add space to your property is with a DIY garage conversion. You do not have to be a general contractor to build your new office, man cave or craft room.

After you have decided on a garage conversion, one of the first things you will have to do is survey your situation. You have to decide if you want to leave the garage door as is, or remove it, and add a large window or patio door. If you want to leave the door on, but still want a new look, consider swapping it out for a new door. There are garage door prices that will suit any budget.

You will probably have to add insulation, as most garage floors are on a concrete slab. Another thing to consider is your heating and cooling system. If your garage is connected to your home, it is usually very easy to attach your existing heating and cooling system. If you have a stand alone space, you can buy a room heater, and air-conditioning unit.

Wiring and plumbing are also considerations. Most garage conversions will need a new 20-amp circuit. If it is a larger project, you may need more than one. This allows you to run more power without blowing any existing circuits. Before you start the project, you may want to talk with a plumber, as he can advise you about drainage, and water supply. Laundries that are in the garage can easily be converted to a bathroom, as the plumbing has already been installed.

If you are planning to convert your garage, you will need to talk with the city planning committee to find out if you need a permit. Most states require one, even if it is not a habitable space.

Adding additional space to your home will give you more room, and could increase the value of your property, but remember that it will also reduce your storage capacity. You may have to rent self storage, or make room in your attic or basement. If you live in an area that has unsettled weather, you may want to build a carport.
