Has it ever occurred to you that, while most of your neighbors may never seem the interior of your home, it’s a fairly good bet that they will see inside your garage on a fairly regular basis. Every time you hit the button on your garage door opener, the inside of your garage is revealed to anyone who may be passing by.
A few people, those you actually invite into your home have the opportunity to appreciate that beautiful oak or walnut floor that you spent so much having installed, or, perhaps, the Italian tile that makes such a statement in the kitchen and bathrooms. But, what does the rest of the world see as they drive by? Is your garage a catch-all for all of those things you don’t want inside the house or is it well-lit and smartly organized. What about your garage flooring? Is it bare concrete that has become stained and dingy over the years? Have you ever taken the time to try and see it through the eyes of others?
The good news is that there are several options available, today, which will turn your garage into a room that will be the envy of the neighborhood. True, for those who can barely fit a car in amongst all the junk, there will also be a fair amount of effort involved, but the end result will be so worth it.
Once you have sorted and carted away all the unnecessary items, and before adding any sort of shelving or storage compartments, the first thing to tackle is the floor. Many people opt for painting. There are epoxy paints designed specifically for concrete and come in all sorts or colors. One caveat, however, is to make sure the surface is absolutely free of all dust, dirt, oil or anything else that might be present. Otherwise, the paint will not bond and you will end up with an unsightly, peeling mess. For that reason, it might be a good idea to take a look at all of the garage matting and tile products that are made for garages. Easy to install, with little to no floor prep, these both look great.
This may seem like a daunting project. If that is causing you to hesitate, think about what is probably the most common reaction among homeowner’s once they finish, which is “why didn’t we do this a long time ago?”
