Is A Carport Right For You?

You may be wondering whether a carport is really the right choice for you and your car storage needs.  There are both advantages and disadvantages to consider before you just rush into a project such as adding a carport to your property.  Let’s take a look at a couple of each of these.

One advantage of adding a carport to your place is cost.  It is relatively cheap to build a simple carport instead of a full blown garage if all you are wanting to do is keep your car protected from the elements.  This is probably the biggest advantage and likely the one factor that most people who choose to go the route of the carport use to make their final decision.

Another advantage is that a carport is easy to build yourself, if you so choose to do so.  Whether you design and build one from scratch or buy plans and then purchase the materials, a carport can be put together over the course of a couple weekends with relative ease.  You could also buy a kit, such as an aluminum carport kit, and have everything pre-cut and ready to go for you.

While the advantages are great, there are a few things you should be wary of.  A carport itself, due to the nature of the design, will not protect your vehicle from the harsher elements, such as hard winds with hail.  This, of course, is because a carport is open on all sides.  Also, it is not possible to lock a carport to prevent, or rather to deter, theft.

Before you build a carport, you will also need to check with your local zoning laws.  Sadly, some officials and communities will not allow you to erect a carport.  If this is the case, you don’t want to be in the middle of putting one up only to be given a fine and told to take it down.

These are just a few things to keep in mind before you make your final decision regarding your carport.  As always, do your research and use common sense before spending your hard earned money.
