How to Personalize Your Breakfast Nook Set

One possible downside to buying your breakfast nook furniture as a set, is that it can look like standard factory stock and there is no personality or originality associated with the table and chairs. There are several ways that you can take a factory breakfast nook set and turn into something personal and beautiful.

First, you can paint or stencil the table and or the chairs. If you are not crazy about stained wood, which is most common for manufactured breakfast nook sets, then you can paint the breakfast nook table and chairs different colors. A great way to add character to the room is to paint the legs and sides one color and the tabletop and chair seats another color. Stencils can also add a nice personal touch. It works particularly well if you use the same stencils that are on your kitchen cabinets. It ties to two rooms together nicely.

Another way to personalize your breakfast nook table is to create a tile tabletop. You can buy colored tiles of many different shapes and sizes and create your own design on the table. You can choose to match the tile backsplash in the kitchen or not. An alternative is to use periodic stenciled tiles to add flavor to the tile design. Still another option is the break up large tiles into pieces and create a mosaic picture with the broken pieces.

A neat idea that I saw a few years ago was a family that had each member create a tile with a handprint or a piece of artwork on it. The tiles were then incorporated into the table top design. Now, that table is a constant reminder of their family and how much they have grown over the years.

One other thing you can do to try and make stock furniture look more unique is to distress it. By creating nicks and gauges in the sides of the table and legs and by rounding the corners, you can make the piece look older than it truly is.
