Floor coating is an age old technique which is used to preserve floors and allow them to last longer than they are designed to last by protecting and eliminating the potential of future damage. Many different types of floors can be coated for preservation including, cement, tile, wood, and more. The type of flooring we will be talking about today is garage floor coatings.
What are the benefits of coating a garage floor?
By coating your garage floor you are protecting the grounds of your garage from everyday damage such as grease and oil stains, along with any other substance which may come into contact with your floor. Along with harsh weather damage which could be endured by a non-treated flooring in an open garage in seasons such as winter.
How to coat a garage floor?
Typically the most commonly used for garage floor coating is a epoxy coating product. Being most garage floors are made from cement these techniques should work for all garage owners.
The first thing you want to do before coating your floor is to through-fully clean it of loose debris and dirt. You can do this by simply brushing off all loose dirt with a broom and then treating your floors with natural cleaners which can bring up and out any current stains and discolorations before applying your epoxy.
After you have cleaned the floor you may rinse any remaining chemicals by hosing down the floor with your typical run of the mill garden hose avoiding contact with any walls and always making sure you are pointing your hose towards the open garage door so the water runs out of your garage instead of remaining inside.
Sticking to the directions provided by the manufacturer of your epoxy coating you want to mix and prep the coating as directed. The directions for mixing should be located either with given instructions or on the side of your container and package.
Wait until the beginning of the following day to apply your epoxy coating, this is to ensure that the floors are dry so the coating will not end up setting wrong or have weakened lasting effectiveness. Using a long paint roller slowly and evenly roll the paint along your garage floor. For corners and areas close to your walls you may use a narrow brush to apply coating to corners and edges.
Let the coating sit for 24 hours before applying a second coat which will ensure that your epoxy has completely covered your garage flooring thick enough to protect the underlying layer. 24 hours after your second coating has completed your garage should be safe for continued usage. But refrain from re-entering any vehicles for at least 1 week after application.
Always remember when applying coating to roll the paint on in such a way as to when you finish you will be able to exit your garage without stepping on any fresh coating.
Where can I buy epoxy?
Garage floor epoxy can be purchased at any home maintenance shop, or online store. But, if you’re looking for the best possible deal, I suggest you look online first before heading down to your local hardware store.
