And thanks to manufacturing companies tweaking their products, a regular like me and you can easily install a carport over the weekend without having any specialized building skills or equipment. Do-it-yourself metal carports really resemble jigsaw puzzle. All of the pieces come in a kit, along with a detailed instruction guide, that makes it pretty straight forward to put together. Once all of the pieces are put together, the end result is a durable and affordable shelter for your car.

Most do-it-yourself carports is pretty much put together before it arrives at your door. These are pretty much prefabricated shelters, with large pieces are then shipped directly to your door, hence the phrase do-it-yourself carports. However, you can always pay someone to assemble it for you, but if you like to work with your hands or you’re just looking for a new challenge, you can save a lot of money assembling it yourself.

You can buy DIY carport kits online or you can go to a retail store. Home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot offer a good, but limited selection of DIY metal carport kits. Most of the kits are really affordable and start around a few hundred dollars for a basic desgn. But there are models that range in size, materials, and amenities that can really raise the price quickly.

Whatever you do, make sure that you follow the directions when you assemble your do-it-yourself metal carport kit. Each manufacturer has specific instructions and guidelines that must be followed for your specific shelter. Although two shelters may look very similar in appearance doesn’t mean they are made the same. Companies use different manufacturing techniques and materials so make sure you pick the exact model you want to fit your needs.

But before you start shopping, make sure you check with your local building code office to see if there is anything you need to do or know about installing a carport on your property. Some towns and cities have really strict laws when it comes to what type of shelter you can install on your property and even on how to install it. And whatever you do, try your best to follow the guidelines you will be provided. If you don’t, you will probably be fined repeatedly until you correct whatever problem there is.
