Creating a Comfortable Garage with Insulation and Heaters

Utilizing the space of the garage is a great way to extend the usable square footage of the home, and by using garage door insulation, it can be an inviting and comfortable place to spend time.

Whether a person works in their garage, or uses it for a recreation room, an un-insulated space will become too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. To solve this problem, insulation panels can be installed in the garage door, and fiberglass in the ceiling.

To keep heat in, insulating the ceiling will have the greatest impact. To do so, the fiberglass material can be purchased in rolls or pre-cut panels. Many people prefer to roll out the fiberglass and trim it to fit. To complete a garage conversion, drywall paneling may need to be installed or other structural changes made. Once the homeowner has done all they can to prevent heat loss, it is time to consider a choice of heating elements.

Even with extensive heat loss prevention, battling the cold winter will require electric garage heaters. A simple portable unit can be purchased, but for a shop heater or when the space is used for long periods of time, it is a good idea to use a more energy efficient model installed by professionals.

To accommodate a built-in model, a proper heat venting duct system will be needed. This will prevent dangerous conditions, allowing excess heat to escape through a side wall or the roof. The electric unit is low profile and will fit snugly to the wall or ceiling.

A full conversion should take several elements into account. Maintaining a comfortable temperature is one aspect, and one that will keep the heater from working harder than it has to. Other considerations are choosing a flooring material to provide comfort and sound dampening, and designing the storage and work areas to allow for easy access to tools, and free-flowing movement.
